Haywood County Schools would like to welcome you to the North Carolina School Report Card site. The site provides valuable information about our schools and how our system compares to others across the state. The Report Cards provide details about school performance under the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). They contain information about school discipline, high school graduation rates, and digital learning devices. You will also find data for class sizes, attendance, school safety and teacher quality.

In 2012-13, North Carolina public schools began using a new Standard Course of Study, new student assessments and a new school accountability model. The new curriculum and assessments reflect higher standards and expectations for our students. Students are expected to master more rigorous material than in the past and our focus is not only on grade level proficiency, but also on college and career readiness measures designed to help students be successful beyond high school graduation.

The current 2013-14 Report Card represents the second year of the state’s READY initiative. The implementation in the 2012-13 school year set the baseline for the new proficiency standards and expectations. Historical data indicates that any time a state implements a new curriculum and new assessments, student achievement scores will drop. This is evident in scores across North Carolina for the last two years.

However, we are extremely proud of the accomplishments of our teachers and students during this transition. In 2013-14, Haywood County Schools ranked 15th among the 115 school districts in North Carolina in overall performance. Among K-5 Title I schools across the state, Riverbend Elementary is ranked 1st in academic performance for schools making academic growth. Junaluska Elementary is in the top two percent and Jonathan Valley and Bethel Elementary are in the top five percent. Our middle schools out-performed three fourths of other middle schools in NC and our high schools ranked 17th among 115 districts in ACT scores. As state and federal standards and expectations rise, our schools are rising to meet those challenges! While these are impressive statistics, we know we couldn’t do this without the continued support of parents and the community.
