Beginning in 2013-14 school year, students took the 40 Book Challenge. After reading a great number of books, students began to discuss which book was best. As a result, Bethel created the Bethel Kids’ Choice Book Awards to acknowledge the students’ love of reading and to value their opinions.

Students had to describe what they loved most about their chosen book. Each class then voted to determine which book would go on the grade-level ballot. Each grade voted on their overall favorite book.

Kindergarten choose “Clark the Shark” by Bruce Hale because it teaches readers how to be a good student and liked how it rhymed.

First grade’s favorite book was “Chester” by Melanie Watt. Students liked how Chester rewrote the story to suit his own needs.

Second Grade chose “Bad Kitty Gets a Bath” by Nick Bruel.  Arabella Jackson wrote “This book is hilarious.  The funniest part is where the author lists the things you need when are giving a cat a bath.

The third graders’ favorite book was “I Survived the Japanese Tsunami.”  They were anxious to learn about current events.

Fourth grade became immersed in a grade level real aloud entitled “Because of Mr. Terupt” by Rob Buyea.  They could relate to the characters easily.

Fifth grade’s book of choice was “Wonder” by R.J. Palacio.  This book took different perspectives of the same event and exposed students to a new form of writer’s craft.

Bethel Elementary’s students and staff alike are always looking for a new read.  We encourage each of you to pick a good book this summer.  Start with one of these great books.
