Topic: Haywood County Schools Announces “No Day” and Saturday School

Due to the continuing Winter Storm, Tuesday, October 30, 2012 will be closed. It will be a “No Day” for students and staff. Staff may only work with the prior approval of the Superintendent, Associate Superintendent, Principal or appropriate system-level administrator.

The missed school will be made up for students and staff on Saturday, November 3rd. Saturday school will operate from 8:00 a.m. until Noon.

Saturday school is used (weather permitting) to make up a missed student day when inclement weather causes school to be closed early in the week. Saturday school is typically not used when school is missed late in the week because there is less time to adjust schedules and weather conditions are less certain due to recent winter weather.

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “We average over eight missed days each year due to inclement weather. The state legislature has reduced our workdays from twenty each year to ten each year. Since we use workdays to make up missed student days, we are really in a bind went it snows often or early in the school year.”

Dr. Anne Garrett, superintendent said, “Last year our calendar committee recommended using Saturday make up days early in the school year. While this is a change of practice for our school system, it should help us deal with the continued loss of workdays. It should also help to limit the impact of winter weather on the length of the school year.”

Dr. Bill Nolte said, “Hopefully, the legislature will realized that some of us have winter weather and give us the resources and flexibility to control our school calendar locally. Currently they tell us when to start and when to end. However, there is very little consideration or flexibility for school systems who consistently have winter weather.”
