The 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year were recognized at the annual luncheon on September 12, 2013, at Laurel Ridge Country Club.  Congratulations to Sally Hundley, STEM and math remediation teacher at Bethel Middle School, who was selected as the 2013-14 Haywood County Schools Teacher of the Year.

In her Teacher of the Year portfolio, she stated, “When I was young, I loved to watch Wonder Woman.  Each time she used reasoning and logic to bring justice, I cheered.  When the bad guys weren’t reasonable and the Bracelets of Victory were necessary, I applauded.  She was larger than life, amazing, and remains my favorite superhero.  The issue is just that, superhuman.

Wonder Woman is not the answer to improving the teaching profession, although the Lasso of Truth would be awesome in a middle school classroom.  Strengthening and improving the teaching profession is about working together as colleagues.  It takes educators in numbers, not superhumans in isolation.

As the leader in my classroom and a teacher leader within my school, it is my responsibility to grow.  That growth is multiplied when it is shared with my colleagues.  Strengthening teaching won’t come from donning a cape, although that would be super cool. It will come from the continuous improvement of colleagues learning new skills, new approaches, and even a fresh perspective on their work.”
