After a significant delay and much anticipation, the 2012-13 school performance indicators have been released.  The information was approved and released on November 7, 2013 during a regular meeting of the State Board of Education.   North Carolina has had a school accountability program since 1996.  In 2012-13 the state strengthened its accountability model and launched the READY initiative to overhaul the Standard Course of Study, student assessments and school accountability. Now, all three are aligned to rigorous career and college readiness standards.

North Carolina’s new model continues a long-standing practice of increasing rigor in curriculum and assessments.  The state will continue to report academic growth rates and the percentage of students scoring proficient on state assessments.  Growth reflects the progress students made during the school year.  Performance standards are higher now than in the past, which makes it more difficult for some students to reach proficiency levels.

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit.  Water also boils at 100 degrees Celsius.  In North Carolina, curriculum standards and test scores have been moved from the Fahrenheit Scale to the Celsius Scale.  Despite the additional rigor and re-normed testing scale, we still have high performing students and schools.”

Dr. Anne Garrett, superintendent said, “We always look forward to the annual release of academic performance indicators.  It gives us an opportunity to celebrate our successes and focus on areas where we need to improve.  For us, it is about continuous improvement.”

Dr. Anne Garrett, superintendent said, “We are pleased with the overall performance of our students and schools with more rigorous curriculum and assessment.  We will turn our attention and effort to improving areas where we did not do well.  This includes performance in Biology, the number of students taking rigorous high school math courses, eighth grade math and college readiness as indicated by the WorkKeys assessment.”

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “As additional detailed data is released we will conduct a comparison of our performance to similar schools in the region and state.  This type of analysis usually helps us see additional areas for growth and it shows us schools who are doing well in a particular area who could serve as a potential resource.”
