During the March 10, 2014 meeting of the Haywood County Board of Education, the Board voted to adjust the school calendar. The adjustments are designed to make up for the “no/closed” days on February 12 and 14.

Haywood County Schools’ averages just over 8 missed student days each year due to inclement weather. Thus far, 11 days have been missed this school year. This is due in large part to frequent snow and ice as well as some abnormally low temperatures.

The Board approved making Friday, April 18, 2014 a 12:00 p.m. dismissal and Monday, May 26, 2014 a full school day. The holidays previously scheduled on these dates were moved to February 12 and 14.

Classified or hourly paid employees who were asked to work on February 12 and 14 will have their time credited to compensation time.

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “When you have an unusually difficult winter, you are forced to make unusual adjustments to the school calendar. While there is not a perfect way to adjust the calendar, this move maintains 180 school days, prevents employees from losing pay and prevents school from rolling into the third week in June.”

Pending additional closings, this move by the Board allows school to finish on Thursday, June 12, 2014.
