KKreitzburgKaren Kreitzburg a teacher at Waynesville Middle School has been named the 2014 James G. K. McClure Award recipient from Haywood County Schools. Kreitzburg will serve on a travel delegation of teachers from North Carolina. The teachers will travel to Germany this summer to study.

Germany has long been acknowledged for its technological innovation and leads the European Union in patent registrations, renewable energy policies and manufacturing. Global Teachers to Germany is a professional development program for K-12 educators that will allow them to explore technological innovation, particularly in renewable energy and sustainable development as well as gain an enhanced awareness of Germany’s history, culture and education system. The program will include site visits to schools, non-profit organizations, businesses, cultural sites and historic sites.

The McClure Award will cover the full cost of the program and travel fees of approximately $5,000. Program costs include international round-trip airfare from Raleigh or Charlotte, airport taxes, health insurance during the international portion of the program, hotel accommodations, most meals, ground transportation abroad and program costs in Germany. The program also includes an orientation, speakers, facilities, some meals, materials and an information handbook.

McClure Award Program allow us to participate in this wonderful professional development activity. Our teachers always use their experiences to help students improve global awareness.”

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “This is always a competitive award among our teachers. High quality applications are submitted from across various teacher groups. Karen’s application was strong, with the most first place rankings and also being ranked first or second by every reviewer.”
