Due to a change in state law, only children who will turn 5 years old on or by August 31 will be eligible to register for kindergarten in the state of North Carolina. (The revised law moves the legal school entry age up by a month and a half in an effort to reduce drop-out rates in later grades and make sure students are ready for formal school when they begin kindergarten.)

The following are required when registering your child:

  •  a certified copy of the child’s birth certificate which must be left at the school;
  • proof of residence (Drivers License ONLY); and
  • the child’s updated immunization record.

Elementary schools hold special registration and orientation times to help youngsters make the transition to kindergarten before the school year begins. Haywood County Schools, in compliance with North Carolina law, require parents to present the following documents before a child can attend school:

  • Must present a health assessment (physical exam report) by the first day of school entry. The assessment must have been completed within 12 months of school entry.
  • In addition, North Carolina law requires parents/guardian to present certification of immunizations on the first day of school entry. A list of the required immunizations will be in the registration packet parents receive from the school.
