Hazelwood Elementary School is serious about summer reading! We all know summer can be filled with many fun activities, family trips, time to relax, and adventures beyond the normal school day. Did you also know that summer can also be a time when students experience the Summer Slide? This slide refers to the drop in a student’s reading level over the summer and the loss of many reading skills and strategies learned over the school year. This happens when a student doesn’t read over the summer. Research has proven that this is a serious problem when kids don’t read over the summer.

Because we don’t want our Hazelwood students to experience the Summer Slide, students and staff at Hazelwood have all set summer reading goals and are making plans to accomplish those goals. Students were recently encouraged to choose summer reading materials from a collection of new and gently used books to help keep them reading over the summer break. “Our goal is to get reading materials in the hands of all our students,” said Principal, Susan Savage. As well as taking home books, students have been encouraged to come to our Summer Reading Program. Starting on June 24th, the Hazelwood Elementary Library will be open from 11:00-1:00 for book checkout, story time, and parent support.
