Beginning in September, classes at Central Elementary School in Waynesville were challenged to read, read, read! While reading is consistently encouraged, a special competition between classrooms had students motivated to push themselves more. Classes were divided into three categories: kindergarten and first grade, second and third grades, and fourth and fifth grades. Students were given special reading logs to record the book(s) and number of minutes read each night. These were tallied at the end of September, October, and November, and progress was charted on a “football field” bulletin board. At the end of each month, the class in each category with the highest total minutes received a reward such as doughnuts and hot chocolate or a special literature based video treat. In December the overall winner for each division was recognized with a special reading reward. Athletes from Tuscola High School came to the classrooms to share their favorite Christmas or holiday stories. After reading with the students, each student got to decorate a cookie and have a glass of “Grinch Punch” (also known as a lime sherbet float). Winning classrooms were: K-1- Mrs. Noland’s class with 3,159 minutes, 2-3- Mrs. Ford’s class with 6,343 minutes, and 4-5- Ms. Little’s class with 7,810 minutes.
