Haywood County Schools is offering 24 private pay slots in the Pre-K Program for the 2015-16 school year. There will be 4 private pay slots at each of the school district’s 6 Pre-K sites. The sites include Central Elementary, Clyde Elementary, Hazelwood Elementary, Jonathan Valley Elementary, Meadowbrook Elementary and North Canton Elementary for a total of 24 slots district-wide. A lottery to fill the 4 available slots at each site will be held on Friday, June 5th at 5:30 pm. The lottery will be held at the Education Center at 3215 Broad Street in Clyde.

Parents may enter their children in the lottery for as many of the 6 Pre-K sites as they wish. Children must be 4 years-old by August 31, 2015 in order to be eligible for the Pre-K program. Pre-K lottery applications are available at the Central Office at 1230 North Main Street in Waynesville. The monthly fee for private pay students is $550 per month. This covers the cost of the services and is slightly higher than the typical cost of daycare for four year-olds in Haywood County. Parents are encouraged to call 456.2400 for additional information. The application deadline is 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 4th.

The lottery for paid slots will not reduce the number of children who qualify for free services funded through Title I and NC Pre-K. Parents are encouraged to apply for free eligibility based slots and paid lottery slots. Parents may decline paid lottery slots if they otherwise qualify for services under Title I and NC Pre-K.

“We are excited about expanding Pre-K to include a limited number of paid slots,” said Bill Nolte associate superintendent. “Some parents are seeking an additional year of quality school experiences for their children. We hope this expansion will meet some of those needs. We also hope the demand for Pre-K will allow us to offer additional opportunities in the future.”
