Earlier today Waynesville Middle School implemented a minimum lockdown for precautionary purposes. A vague and non-specific written threat was discovered on campus. After conferring with local law enforcement, school administrators implemented a minimum lockdown to follow up on investigative leads in a secure setting.

Parents were sent a rapid notification message to inform them of the precautionary lockdown. Video footage was reviewed and a number of individuals were interviewed I n an effort to determine the individual or individuals who left the vague threat. The investigation concluded that was never any danger to students, staff or property.

The precautionary lockdown was lifted at 12:55 pm and the school returned to a normal operating schedule.

The investigation of the matter will continue. Appropriate discipline and legal action will be taken if the offender or offenders can be verified.

“We are thankful that this did not involve an actual threat,” said Principal Trevor Putnam. “In situations like this it is better to error on the side of safety.”

“We really appreciate the quick and helpful response from the Waynesville Police Department,” said Dr. Anne Garrett, Superintendent. “A number of staff members and students helped us follow up on early leads. The safest schools have people who openly talk with each other about safety concerns.”
