The 4th grade AIG students from all 8 elementary schools joined together on Nov. 1 for a field trip to the Zebulon Vance birthplace in Weaverville. A tour of the house and gardens introduced students to life on a mountain farmstead in the early 1800s and compared life for the average settler to our lives today. Students used their investigative skills to examine 200 year-old artifacts in order to figure out their use. Making a button spinner, a traditional toy from the time period, and candle making was a favorite.
