The Kenan Fellows Program for Teacher Leadership, Haywood Electric Membership Cooperation, and Haywood County Schools are proud to announce that Noal Castater of Waynesville Middle School has been awarded a 2020–21 Kenan Fellowship.  Mr. Castater is among an esteemed group of nineteen North Carolina teachers who were selected from a competitive pool of more than seventy statewide applicants.   Mr. Castater is supported by Haywood EMC and North Carolina’s Electric Cooperatives and will partner with Danielle Wittekind, Tom Batchelor, Ken Thomas and Jennifer Heiss for a project entitled EmPowering Education.

The Kenan Fellows Program was established in 2000 as a K–12 education initiative of the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology, and Science at North Carolina State University.  The Program addresses the critical need for high-quality professional development for educators, and is the largest science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) focused teacher fellowship in North Carolina.

While remaining in the classroom, Kenan Fellows use knowledge and tools gained during the year-long fellowship to develop innovative educational resources and programs for their schools, districts and the broader educational community.  A summer internship of at least three weeks is the centerpiece of the program and is supported by eighty hours of professional development that focuses on building leadership capacity, instructional strategies for integrating data literacy, digital learning, and project-based learning.  Additional information about our program is enclosed in this letter.

Mr. Castater’s classes are very popular,” said Todd Barbee, Waynesville Middle School Principal.  “He mannerisms students with hands on learning opportunities.  Mr. Castater will do anything possible to engage students in learning.  In the same week, students might learn about fertilizers for soil types, two-cycle engine operations, and how plants do in a particular climates.  He make learning a lot of fun.”
