Around noon on Tuesday, May 13, 2014 school officials were notified regarding a gas line break near Central Haywood High School in Clyde, North Carolina.

The line was damaged in conjunction with a waterline repair.  Students and staff were evacuated to a gymnasium across the Pigeon River near the school. The evacuation only applied to Central Haywood High School and did NOT apply to other schools.

Multiple agencies including the fire department and gas company responded quickly to address the break.  School officials sent a voice message to parents of the school.  Students may be picked up at the old Clyde gymnasium or they may access normal bus transportation at the end of the day.

Afternoon buses will depart from the old gymnasium across the Pigeon River from the school.  The school is scheduled to return to the regular schedule on Wednesday, May 14, 2014.

Line repairs were made by the Town of Clyde.  The campus was cleared of gas fumes and deemed safe at approximately 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Anne Garrett, superintendent said, “We are pleased that this incident ended without any injuries of damage to property.  We deeply appreciate the quick response from staff, law enforcement and Clyde Town Officials.”

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “We have practice evacuation drills for situations like this.  We are very proud of our students and staff.  They moved quickly and safely to one of the designated evacuation locations.”
