Haywood County Consolidated Schools believes arts education increases the 21st skills of problem solving, critical thinking, creativity, imagination, collaboration and teamwork. Arts Education is a collective term that incorporates dance, theater arts, visual arts and music.

Teachers of the arts are certified, and highly qualified. Arts educators teach the North Carolina Standard Course of Study in their discipline (dance, music, theatre arts, or visual arts) and focus on processes, skills and techniques, complex problem-solving, higher order thinking skills, and connections to other curriculum.

Elementary Schools (Pre K-5), are taught music and visual arts during the school day. Students perform for schools, parents and community members at various music programs throughout the schools year. Visual Arts is taught every other week to all elementary students.

Middle Schools (6-9) may choose band, chorus, visual arts, and in some schools musical theater. Students in band and chorus may choose to audition to participate in local, district, and state Honor bands and choirs.

High Schools (9-12), students may choose course offerings in chorus, band, visual arts and in some schools theater arts. Students in arts education may choose to audition to participate in Honor bands and choirs at the local, district, state and even national levels.

The Haywood County Consolidated Schools K – 12 Art Show is held in the spring of every year. Student work is displayed and a Best In Show and People’s Choice Awards are given for both 2-D and 3-D pieces.

There are extracurricular arts opportunities at each level.
