Haywood County Schools is proud to celebrate Rachel Clegg, who was recently named the North Carolina Student Teacher of the Year.
Rachel grew up in St. Paul’s, NC, and attended Western Carolina University, where she prepared for her lifelong dream of becoming a teacher. She completed her student teaching at Franklin High School and was hired at Tuscola High School immediately following graduation.
From an early age, Rachel knew she was destined to teach-whether it was helping classmates in elementary school, tutoring in high school, or lending a hand as the “teacher’s helper,” she has always been drawn to education. Today, she teaches English I at Tuscola, where she is passionate about creating a welcoming classroom environment and tailoring lessons to meet the needs of her students.
Rachel shared that one of the things she values most about working in Haywood County Schools is the overwhelming support she has received: “HCS has been so welcoming. I’ve received the resources and encouragement I need without even having to ask—sometimes I didn’t even know what to ask for.”
Administrators at Tuscola High School praised Ms. Clegg, saying:
“We are very excited about Ms. Rachel Clegg being awarded the North Carolina Student Teacher of the Year! Ms. Clegg consistently demonstrates creativity, confidence, and professionalism in her teaching. Her engaging lessons inspire curiosity and participation, while her ability to establish a welcoming, respectful classroom ensures that every student feels heard and valued. Ms. Clegg has been a tremendous asset to her department and to our school community as a whole. We are truly grateful to have her on the hill at Tuscola High School.”
Please join us in congratulating Rachel on this incredible recognition and for the positive impact she is making on her students and our community.
