When students use the Internet, there is always a risk that they might access material that is inappropriate. In order to minimize this risk, HCS filters some content on the Internet from students. Material that is extremely violent, pornographic, or simply inappropriate for students to access is blocked within the HCS network. In fact, some of our funding is dependent on our ability to filter student access to these sites.
Material that is inappropriate for students might not always be inappropriate for adults. Therefore, staff are filtered differently than students. In the near future, staff members within the HCS network will begin to see that some sites that were once blocked are now accessible. With this new level of access comes responsibility. It is critical that staff members logout of their account and require students to log in using their own credentials when using machines that might be shared between students and staff. It is never appropriate to allow students to access the internet using a staff member’s account.
In addition, we are required to filter student access to the internet from home if they are using technology owned by HCS. Please make sure that the technology department is aware of any machines that you are sending home with students. We will need to verify that the machines are being filtered before you send them home.
Regardless of the software or device, the most effective filter is a staff member monitoring student use of technology. This is especially true of our younger students. It is our responsibility to create an environment where students can safely learn to navigate the digital world. This is done through careful monitoring, modeling appropriate technology use to students, and instructing students on Internet safety. An Internet filter alone cannot keep students safe in the digital world. It is designed to be a safety net rather than a classroom management tool.
We want to make sure we are providing you with the tools you need to monitor and manage your students access to the internet. Please let us know if we can assist you with this process.
