Dawn Cusick, a local author and professor of Biology at Haywood Community College, came to Bethel on April 29. Ms. Cusick presented interesting and even gross facts about animals to the students. The information included facts about how animals use their poop to mislead predators and why some animals use their own vomit to protect their babies. The children’s responses were a healthy mix of grossed out and intrigued. There were other fun facts included in Ms. Cusick’s presentation that did not involve puke or poop. For instance, there is a species of frog that gives birth to fully developed frog babies instead of tadpoles. After the presentation, Ms. Cusick allowed time for questions and personal book signings. The students were given the opportunity to buy two of Ms. Cusick’s books, Animals That Make You Say Ouch! and Animals That Make You Say Wow!, prior to her presentation. Ms. Cusick makes learning about animal behaviors and science fun for both kids and adults.
