Central Elementary Girls on the Run held a “penny war” to raise money for Relay for Life. The team sponsored the week-long competition to challenge students to dig in their pockets, couch cushions, and anywhere else that they might find spare change to donate. Each penny counted as a point for the grade level team. Silver coins and paper bills served to negate the pennies that were in the buckets, so those were placed in the buckets of OTHER teams. During the week, to raise awareness, each day had a theme: Crazy Sock Day, Crazy Hat Day, Purple Shirt Day, Colored Shirt to represent someone that you know that has cancer, and Sunglasses Day. The total money raised was a whopping $684.89!! Kindergarten won the friendly competition and was awarded an ice cream party.

Girls on the Run is a nationwide program to encourage fitness and teach healthy habits to young females. This year, the 1,000,000th participant was registered. Central’s Girls on the Run Team completed a 5K run on April 16th with their volunteer coaches and parents to cheer them on!
