First graders at Bethel Elementary studied the character traits of the characters from the Arthur Series by Marc Brown and voted on which one they thought would make the best “friend.” Teachers used this opportunity to discuss voting, elections, campaigns, candidates, responsibilities and rights. Students were involved in making campaign posters to try to convince the others to vote for their candidate. They learned secret ballots and then had to show their voter registration card at the “polls.” Arthur won by a landslide!
