The water project in Ms. Otey’s 5th grade class began with a study of the Water Cycle. This unit allowed us to talk about some of the issues our world faces in regards to its water, one of these issues being lack of access to clean water. My students came to me wanting to help. The first suggestion was to send packs of water to areas that did not have access to clean water. Encouraged by their generous hearts, I wanted to find a way for my students to help in a more sustainable way. That’s when I found the Water Project. The Water Project is an organization that raises money to build wells in communities that don’t have access to clean water. We set our goal at $1,000 and by the end of the project my class had raised $953.14. Our money will be used to build a well in southeastern Kenya, specifically in the Makueni, Mackakos, and Kitui counties. These wells will be complete by July 15th, 2017. Until then we look forward to receiving pictures, updates, and learning more about these communities.
