This is an update on several items related to the school calendar. Please note the following and share with students and parents as appropriate.

  • Following the inclement weather last week, the last student learning day is currently scheduled for Friday, June 4th.
  • Wednesday, February 24th is a scheduled Remote Learning Optional Workday.  Many of our high school juniors will also be taking the ACT on February 24th.
  • There is a slight chance inclement weather will occur on Thursday and/or Friday. If we have inclement weather that causes school to close this week (February 22nd-26th), the closed day could be a Remote Learning Optional Workday. The Morning Crew will monitor inclement weather situations. If any announcements are necessary, they will be made no later than 5:45 a.m. on the impacted school day. Any announcements will be made through our rapid notification system. If in doubt, please check multiple sources (HCS website, HCS social media, and local media outlets).
  • This school year we have missed 14 regular learning days. Five days were missed because of a ransomware attack. One day was missed due to flooding associated with Tropical Strom Zeta. One day was missed due to an off-campus fire that shutdown Internet, telephone and other digital communication services. Seven days were missed due to inclement winter weather. The school system averages nine missed days each year.
  • As missed days add up, achieving the state required learning hours becomes more uncomfortable. In no particular order, the following options are available, if needed, to assure we achieve the state required learning hours:
    • Moving the March 22nd and April 2nd Remote Learning Optional Workdays to inclement weather days
    • Making June 7th-11th regular student learning days
    • Making Memorial Day a regular student learning day

Here is the good news, the days are getting longer and Spring is coming. Hopefully, we won’t need to use any of the options listed above. Be kind, be smart, be safe and think warm weather.
