According to new legislation from the NC General Assembly (G.S. §115C-174.12 and G.S. §1125C-174.11), all annual testing of student achievement adopted by the State Board of Education and all final exams for courses shall be administered within the final ten instructional days of the school year for year-long courses and within the final five instructional days of the semester for semester courses.

Since most high school and some middle school tests count as a portion of the final grade, middle school and high school report cards will not be available on the last day of school.

Middle school and high school report cards may be picked up at school on Monday, June 23 through Thursday, June 26 or parents may provide the school with a self addressed, stamped envelope if they wish the school to mail the report card.  If either of these options is impractical, parents may contact the school to make other arrangements.

The new state laws will not impact the availability of elementary report cards.  Schools will distribute elementary report cards on the last student day.

Parents should contact their child’s school for specific questions about their child’s report card or performance.

Dr. Bill Nolte, associate superintendent said, “This is another adjustment required by questionable legislation.  If you think this is ridiculous, I and other educators agree.  Please let state elected officials know we need fewer regulations and the restoration of funding they have cut.”

Dr. Bill Nolte went on to say; “The state has added a test for almost every subject from third grade through high school.  The state implemented new curriculum standards for every subject from Kindergarten through high school.  The state cut instructional material funds by one-third and told us to do all of the newly required testing in the last five to ten days of school.  Does anyone else think this is ridiculous?”
