WELCOME to Haywood County Schools!

Are you the parent of a school-aged student with an IEP and moving to Haywood County? What should you do?

1 – In what school district is your home located?  If you do not know this, call HCS Transportation Department at 828-456-2421 and provide them with your physical address.

2 – Call or visit your assigned school.  If you have a copy of your child’s IEP, please take it with you.  If not, please be prepared to provide the school with the information needed to receive your child’s EC paperwork.  Please share any information that may not be included in the IEP that is necessary for determining an appropriate classroom placement.  If your child’s IEP documents the need for services in a separate Special Education classroom (high level of support), please contact the Director of the Exceptional Children’s Program – Brandi Stephenson @ 828-456-2400 or email at bstephenson@haywood.k12.nc.us.

In order to make your child’s transition into Haywood County go smoothly, it is very important to provide your child’s new school copies of the following information during registration:
-Most recent psycho-educational report, eligibility, evaluation and/or re-evaluation report;
-Current Individualized Education Program (IEP); and
-Contact information for your child’s previous school and school district.
These items will support a successful transition between your child’s old and new school and will ensure that appropriate services and supports are made available.

What to Expect:
For students coming to HCS from out of state:
Once you have shared your child’s special education records, school staff will invite you to a meeting to discuss comparable services, or services similar to or the same as, provided on your child’s most recent IEP. During the meeting, school staff will also describe the initial eligibility process that occurs when students move from out of state and the timeline in which an initial North Carolina (NC) IEP will be developed.

For students coming to HCS from another public school district in NC:
School staff will begin implementing your child’s current IEP on their first day of school. An invitation to review and revise your child’s IEP may be scheduled. The purpose of the meeting will be to discuss your child’s transition to a new school and to determine if any adjustments to the services and supports currently being provided are needed.
